In one of his last actions before announcing his retirement from Congress, Tennessee U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07) urged lawmakers in the U.S. Senate to hold a trial and convict Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“Last night, the House of Representatives voted to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for high crimes and misdemeanors, specifically for his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and his breach of public trust. This action—the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of investigations and hearings—was necessary to deal with a rogue DHS secretary whose lawless actions have caused and perpetuated the worst border crisis in American history,” Green said during a press conference with House Republican leadership.
“Secretary Mayorkas has shown throughout his tenure that he will defy, ignore, and replace the laws enacted by Congress. His actions have not only shown a disdain for the Constitution, but for Congress, the law, and the American people. The constitutional case against Secretary Mayorkas is sound…It’s now time for the Senate to step up, hold a trial, and convict Secretary Mayorkas,” Green added.
Green’s call came one day after the House voted 214-213 to impeach Mayorkas for his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and breach of the public trust.
The two articles of impeachment against the DHS secretary came as a result of a year-long, five-phase investigation into the border crisis by the House Homeland Security Committee, which included 10 full and subcommittee hearings, transcribed interviews of chief and deputy chief patrol agents, and five interim reports totaling nearly 400 pages.
Following the House’s Tuesday vote to impeach Mayorkas, Tennessee U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said she would vote to convict Mayorkas if “given the opportunity.”
“Secretary Mayorkas is not just failing at his job, he is upending the foundation of our democracy: the rule of law,” Blackburn said in a statement. “At every opportunity, Secretary Mayorkas has led DHS to prioritize making illegal immigration legal and putting lawbreakers ahead of law-abiding Americans. Under his watch, illegally entering our country is no longer a crime. The current Secretary of Homeland Security is not doing his job to secure the homeland, and when given the opportunity, I will vote to convict him.”
